China's top trade negotiator Li Chenggang removed from WTO post by President Xi

( October 20, 2025, 03:16 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex summary: China’s Li Chenggang has been removed as the country’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the World Trade Organization, according to a list of ambassadorial appointments and dismissals approved Monday by President Xi Jinping, state news agency Xinhua reported. Li, who was appointed in April by the State Council as China’s international trade representative and vice commerce minister, took up the post amid escalating trade tensions between Beijing and Washington. Li, a veteran of multiple rounds of China–US economic and trade negotiations, was also relieved of his role as deputy permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland.The statement follows:...
