UK charities to benefit from ‘soft opt-in’ for marketing

By Patricia Figueiredo ( October 16, 2025, 15:49 GMT | Insight) -- UK charities are set to gain more flexibility to contact supporters from January 2026, as the Information Commissioner’s Office consults on how to apply the new “charitable purpose soft opt-in.” The mechanism, created by the Data (Use and Access) Act, will amend regulations to let charities send fundraising emails or texts to people who’ve shown interest or support, without the need for prior consent. The ICO’s proposal establishes guardrails on consent, transparency and data collection, to keep charities from abusing the new mechanism.UK charities will be able to send marketing emails and texts to supporters without prior consent from January, under a new “charitable purpose soft opt-in” now open for consultation from the Information Commissioner’s Office....
