Wind, solar growth reduced Spain’s dependence on fossil fuels, Ember says

( October 2, 2025, 04:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Spain’s embrace of renewable energy has cut the country’s link between high fossil fuels and electricity prices, energy think tank Ember said in a report released Thursday. Since 2019, Spain has reduced its dependence on gas much faster than nations such as Italy and Germany, during which time Spanish energy prices have barely increased and Italian and German prices skyrocketed. Nearly half of Spain’s electricity demand is now met by wind and solar, compared to just 20 percent by fossil fuels. The influence of fossil fuels on electricity prices is correspondingly low, resulting in 32 percent lower wholesale prices in Spain than the average across the EU, the think tank added.
