South Korea regulator flags 45 suspected cases of online 'dark patterns'

( September 30, 2025, 04:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Korea Fair Trade Commission identified 45 suspected cases of “dark patterns” across 36 companies through monitoring conducted between February and July this year, resulting in 34 corrections and 11 corrective plans. The regulator said Tuesday it found that such practices were most common in subscription services for video, music and e-books, where companies made cancellations difficult and automatically upgraded or renewed paid subscriptions without obtaining prior consent from consumers. Platforms have since adjusted their interfaces to make options clearer and reduce nudging toward “dark patterns.” Shopping and travel platforms were also asked to stop displaying partial prices that exclude fees to attract consumers.
