UK to introduce digital IDs, to be mandatory for right-to-work checks
( September 26, 2025, 09:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A digital identity scheme will be introduced across the UK and made mandatory for checks on people's right to work “by the end of this Parliament,” the Labour government announced on Friday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the scheme will “make it tougher to work illegally in this country” and make Britain’s borders more secure. The digital ID will be free for citizens and legal residents and will eventually be linked to a planned digital wallet. A consultation later this year will set rules for delivery, creating a regulatory framework with obligations for employers.Statement follows....
