Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial to increase stake in Jefferies Financial

( September 19, 2025, 04:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group said on Friday that it has agreed to increase its stake in Jefferies Financial Group, a New York–based firm, from 14.5 percent to 20 percent through a 135 billion yen ($910 million) investment. The Japanese company’s voting rights will remain below 5 percent. The deal is subject to receipt of required regulatory approvals, the Tokyo-based group said. Sumitomo Mitsui also plans to establish a joint venture in Japan with Jefferies to combine their wholesale Japanese equities businesses and strengthen their global presence.
