Japan, EU data-protection chiefs agree to expand data-flow arrangement to academia

( September 19, 2025, 00:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Data-protection regulators from Japan and the European Union agreed Thursday in Tokyo to extend their mutual adequacy arrangement for data transfers to cover academia and research. Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission Chairperson Satoru Tezuka and EU Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath said in a joint statement they had “successfully concluded talks on academia and research,” and would “further intensify” discussions on extending the decision to the public sector. The adequacy scheme, in place since 2019, currently applies only to private-sector data transfers. Japan has been pressing to broaden the scope to include academia and government bodies.
