South Korean privacy watchdog to sweep online platforms for leaked personal data

( September 10, 2025, 03:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy watchdog said it will run a three-month campaign with the Korea Internet & Security Agency to monitor and take down illegal online trading of leaked personal data, citing a rise in hacking incidents at telecom and card companies and growing risks of secondary fraud. The Personal Information Protection Commission said from September to November, it will focus on posts that expose or sell resident registration numbers, phone and account details, or databases containing personal information. Platforms under scrutiny include portals, online communities and social-media sites, with takedowns coordinated through hotlines and in cooperation with the Korea Communications Standards Commission and police.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
