Nuclear, fossil gas can stay on EU green list, EU lower court rules
( September 10, 2025, 07:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Austria's legal challenge against the European Commission over the classification of nuclear energy and fossil gas in the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities was dismissed by the bloc's lower-tier court. Austria had contested EU rules labeling certain nuclear and fossil gas activities as “green.” In today's ruling, EU judges stated that “economic activities in the nuclear energy and fossil gas sectors can, under certain conditions, contribute substantially to climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation.” These activities therefore remain part of the EU’s green investment framework.Press release (in English) and judgement (in French) attached.
