SK Telecom hit with record privacy fine in South Korea over massive data breach

( August 28, 2025, 02:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: SK Telecom has been hit with fines totaling 134.8 billion won (about $97.1 million) by South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission, marking the largest penalty the watchdog has ever issued. The decision comes after a data breach that compromised the information of more than 23 million users, including phone numbers, IMSI identifiers and USIM authentication keys. The regulator determined that SK Telecom had breached security obligations by storing authentication keys in plain text, neglecting security updates and failing to promptly notify authorities and users of the breach. It also directed the company to strengthen its governance so that the chief privacy officer can properly exercise oversight, implement comprehensive measures to prevent recurrence and secure ISMS-P certification for the affected telecom networks and systems.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
