Japan's Nikkei, Asahi newspapers sue Perplexity AI for copyright infringement

( August 27, 2025, 01:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Leading Japanese newspapers Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun have filed a joint lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court against Perplexity AI, seeking an injunction and damages of 2.2 billion yen ($15 million) each. The lawsuit filed yesterday alleges that since at least June 2024, Perplexity AI has been copying and storing the newspapers’ content and repeatedly displaying these copied responses on users’ devices, without the publishers’ permission. Despite their attempts to block unauthorized access, the California-based AI company continued to use their content, thereby violating the Copyright Act. Also, the two companies accused the AI company of delivering inaccurate summaries of newspaper articles together with the publishers’ names, harming the companies' reputations and breaching the Unfair Competition Prevention Act.
