Parents of California teen sue OpenAI, Altman alleging ChatGPT caused suicide

( August 26, 2025, 14:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The parents of late California teen Adam Raine have sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco Superior Court, alleging that ChatGPT caused Raine to commit suicide this year at the age of 16. Claims include strict liability and negligence for defective design and failure to warn, wrongful death and violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law. “We want to save lives by educating parents and families on the dangers of ChatGPT companionship," Raine's father, Adam, said in a statement.
