US senators express concern to Surface Transportation Board over rail merger

( July 29, 2025, 15:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Senators Tammy Baldwin and Roger Marshall wrote to the Surface Transportation Board to express their concern with Union Pacific's proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern, which reportedly set off deal discussions at BNSF and CSX. The senators said they're concerned a merger of this magnitude would diminish options for industry to transport goods, increase costs, create more unreliable service for US shippers, and reduce overall competition in a market where the number of carriers has diminished from more than 100 in the 1950s to just six today.
