Thailand now requires SIM-card users to undergo new identity verification

( August 22, 2025, 05:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has mandated identity verification for all SIM-card registrations starting Aug. 18. This change is aimed at curbing fraud with scammers using fake or stolen identities to open a new  phone number, and to protect personal data. The measure applies to new prepaid and postpaid subscribers, as well as existing users changing SIMs with the same number. Registration will use liveness-detection technology to prevent impersonation through photos, videos or 3D masks. Mobile operators must implement secure data handling in line with NBTC requirements and Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act.
