OpenAI defends motion to dismiss Hawaii lawsuit over safety commitments

( August 12, 2025, 22:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: OpenAI is defending its motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by an attorney in Hawaii claiming that the artificial intelligence company's products pose an "imminent and potentially irreversible" risk to the state's residents because it's barred by the "political question doctrine." The plaintiff's argument that states are permitted to regulate AI after the US Senate removed a proposed 10-year moratorium on state AI regulation from the One Big Beautiful Bill "lacks merit," OpenAI said. The "political question doctrine bars courts from deciding claims, such as those at issue here, that raise general policy grievances that rest on policy choices and value determinations and matters not legal in nature," OpenAI said.See attached document....
