Burger King operator fined in Korea for violating franchise law

( August 13, 2025, 06:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: BKR, the operator of Burger King in South Korea, has been fined 300 million won (about $220,000) and issued corrective orders by the country’s competition regulator for forcing franchisees to purchase certain non-essential cleaning products and tomatoes from designated suppliers. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said the company described the items as optional in disclosure documents but in practice limited purchases to a specific US cleaning brand and approved domestic tomato producers, available only through its internal ordering system. Inspectors checked whether franchisees used these products and imposed penalties such as score deductions, delivery suspensions and, in some cases, automatic zero scores and potential store closure or contract termination. The regulator also found BKR failed to disclose that noncompliance could result in such penalties, deeming it a deceptive omission of important information under the franchise law.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
