Big Ten Network, NCAA cite decision to support dismissing football players' US antitrust claims

( August 11, 2025, 20:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Big Ten Network, Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association submitted a notice of supplemental authority in support of their motion to dismiss US antitrust claims from former University of Michigan football players over student-athlete compensation. In a similar antitrust suit involving the NCAA, North Carolina Business Court Judge Mark Davis dismissed plaintiffs' state law antitrust, unfair and deceptive trade practices, misappropriation, invasion of privacy, and unjust enrichment claims, ruling they were untimely and not subject to the continuing wrong doctrine, the filing to the Eastern District of Michigan said. Davis further explained that North Carolina law is consistent with governing federal law which rejects the notion that participants in an athletic contest possess a right of publicity in broadcasts of an event, and even if they did, their claims would be preempted by the federal Copyright Act of 1976, the defendants said.See attached document....
