Singtel Optus failed to protect customers' privacy, Australian watchdog's lawsuit says

( August 8, 2025, 00:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Singtel Optus has been targeted by court action over a data breach it reported in September 2022, with Australia’s privacy watchdog announcing today it had filed a Federal Court of Australia lawsuit against the telecommunications company. In a statement, the Australian Information Commissioner said it would allege that from Oct. 17, 2019, to Sept. 20, 2022, Optus “seriously interfered with the privacy of approximately 9.5 million Australians by failing to take reasonable steps to protect their personal information from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorized access, modification and disclosure, in breach of the 1988 Privacy Act."
