Google in talks with South Korea over export of national base map

( August 5, 2025, 05:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google says the company is in discussions with the South Korean government regarding its request to export the 1:5,000-scale national base map, the company announced in a blog post today. As part of the proposal, Google suggested applying blur effects to sensitive sites at the source-image level to ensure consistent protection across all platforms. The company said that it is requesting approval to export the 1:5,000-scale base map, which has passed government security reviews and is already widely used by local services such as Naver and Kakao Maps, not the 1:1,000-scale high-precision map. Google has requested to export the national base map repeatedly for tourist guidance and navigation services but has been denied due to national security concerns. The blog post comes ahead of the upcoming South Korean government's review of the Google's request.  The link to the blog post, in Korean, is here. ...
