EU’s Russian gas phaseout raises both legal risks and market risks

Terminating long-term gas contracts under force majeure could lead to numerous lawsuits with unpredictable outcomes — especially in Russian courts — legal analysts have said. Meanwhile, industry representatives say the EU's reporting obligations are a barrier to securing alternative gas supplies. The EU plan also risks increasing energy prices, they said.The European Union is determined to end its historic dependence on Russian fossil fuels, and recently published a roadmap to do so (see here)....
