Asiana Airlines fined $8.6 million for breaching merger remedies in South Korea

By Wooyoung Lee ( August 3, 2025, 03:01 GMT | Insight) -- Asiana Airlines has been fined 12.1 billion won ($8.6 million) for failing to comply with merger remedies imposed by South Korea’s competition regulator as part of its approval of the airline’s merger with Korean Air. Asiana was found to have raised fares for three international routes between Incheon and Barcelona, Frankfurt and Rome, as well as a domestic route between Gwangju and Jeju, beyond the limit allowed under the merger remedies. The company was required to keep fare increases within inflation-adjusted levels of 2019, which serve as the benchmark for a 10-year compliance period. In addition to the fine, the competition regulator referred the company to prosecutors for a criminal investigation.
