Electricity demand set to rise globally; emissions to plateau this year

( July 30, 2025, 08:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Global electricity demand is projected to grow by 3.3 percent this year and by 3.7 percent in 2026 — one of the fastest rates in a decade — driven primarily by China and India, the International Energy Agency said in a report published today. Demand will largely come from industry, appliances, data centers, electric vehicles and cooling buildings, the IEA said. Power generation from renewables, nuclear and natural gas is set to replace oil and coal, leading to a plateau in power-sector emissions this year, with a slight decline projected for 2026. In Europe, electricity prices rose in the first half of 2025 and remain twice as high for energy-intensive industries compared to the US, which is impacting the region’s competitiveness, the agency said.Full press release follows:...
