Google moves to dismiss Chegg's US amended antitrust claims over AI answers

( July 25, 2025, 22:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google moved to dismiss Chegg's amended US antitrust claim that Google republishes Chegg's content without permission in its AI-generated answers, and that Google uses a monopoly over internet searches to force digital publishers to give up access to their content without compensation. "Even after amending, ostensibly to address defects that Google raised in its initial motion to dismiss, Chegg still faults Google for introducing features in its search engine that more efficiently provide users with the information they seek, including by synthesizing search results with generative AI," Google said in its filing to the US District Court for the District of Columbia. Chegg's claims must be dismissed because Google is not required to do business with Chegg on its preferred terms, Chegg does not claim to compete with Google in its alleged antitrust market, and the plaintiffs' theory of coercion is implausible given that publishers maintain discretion over which portions of their websites are available to Google, the defendant said.See attached document:...
