The European Commission’s concerns center on the ability for UMG to stifle competition through access to Downtown’s data, and on whether the music services company is an “important competitive force.” Considering the breadth of concerns raised by rivals, that may leave UMG feeling it dodged a more burdensome probe.In-depth EU scrutiny of Universal Music Group’s Downtown takeover, confirmed this week, has been cheered by independent music labels, which welcomed it as a chance to finally stamp down on the world’s largest recorded-music company’s market power....
