Qookka sanctioned in South Korea for illegal collection of resident registration numbers

( July 24, 2025, 09:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Qookka Entertainment and Joboss have been sanctioned by South Korea’s privacy regulator for collecting resident registration numbers in violation of the Personal Information Protection Act. The Personal Information Protection Commission fined Qookka, a global mobile game company, 93.7 million won (about $68,000) after it collected 41 registration numbers, along with names, addresses and contact details, during a game event. Joboss, which operated an employer information-sharing platform before shutting down, required employers to input employees’ registration numbers to post or access reviews. The regulator issued a correction order but did not impose a fine due to the company’s insolvency. Under the privacy law, the use of resident registration numbers is only permitted in exceptional cases explicitly authorized by presidential decree or higher legislation.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
