A state can be liable for climate harms under international law, top court says

( July 23, 2025, 15:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Countries around the world are legally responsible for tackling climate change under international customary law, under climate treaties and under human rights law, the International Court of Justice said in its advisory opinion today. Failure to comply with such obligations would result in a breach of international law, leading to legal consequences, the ICJ said. These could include cessation of wrongful acts, restitutions, compensations and guarantees of non-repetition, provided there is a clear causal relationship between the climate harm and the breach committed by the state, it added.Opinion attached....
