EU Commission counts on scientific advisers to bridge AI models’ enforcement gap

By Luca Bertuzzi ( July 23, 2025, 14:56 GMT | Insight) -- The European Commission will rely on alerts from a panel of independent scientific experts to monitor general-purpose AI models during a one-year enforcement gap, before it gains full investigative powers under the AI Act in August 2026. Starting next month, the commission considers its AI Office will be able to act on “qualified alerts” to assess systemic risks and model capabilities, despite limited formal enforcement tools. This interim mechanism is key to encouraging AI companies to adopt a voluntary EU code of practice, ahead of the sanction regime taking effect in 2026.
