UK adequacy renewal moves forward as EU signs off on data regime

The European Commission’s findings, which follow an assessment of the UK’s new Data Use and Access Act, represent the first stop of the formal renewal process for the country’s adequacy status. The draft decisions now move to the European Data Protection Board and member states for review. Data protection lawyers were expecting the renewal to go forward, but civil society privacy advocates have raised concerns over regulatory divergence between the UK and the EU.The UK’s data protection framework remains adequate to allow the continued free flow of personal data from the EU, the European Commission said today in two draft decisions.
