Kakao to revamp supplier terms under consent decree in South Korea

( July 21, 2025, 03:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Kakao has finalized a consent decree with South Korea’s competition regulator over its treatment of suppliers on the “Kakao Gift” platform, marking the first time the legal tool has been applied under the country’s large retail-business law to an online shopping mall. The Korea Fair Trade Commission had been investigating Kakao for allegedly forcing suppliers to adopt a “free shipping” pricing model and charging commission on prices that included delivery fees. Under the agreement, Kakao will allow suppliers to choose between free and paid shipping models, reduce or freeze various platform fees and provide 9.2 billion won (about $6.6 million) worth of financial and marketing support.
