UK switches on AI supercomputer, ‘compute roadmap,’ sovereign AI unit to pursue policies

( July 17, 2025, 17:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK’s most powerful supercomputer was turned on today by tech minister Peter Kyle, according to a statement from the technology department. The Isambard supercomputer in Bristol is expected to play a vital role in delivering the capacity for developing and operating AI tools to cut emissions and develop new medical cures, as part of the Compute Roadmap launched today. The government hopes the computer will help “fix the foundations of the economy” and reduce reliance on foreign computing power. It has also launched its Sovereign AI Unit with 500 million pounds ($670 million) of funding and an AI for Science initiative with advisors from Microsoft and Google DeepMind that will publish its strategy in the autumn.Statement follows:...
