‘I (red heart)’ symbol can’t be trademarked on clothing, EU court says

( July 9, 2025, 08:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Sprd.net’s appeal of the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s rejection to trademark the “I (red heart)” sign on specific positions on items of clothing has been dismissed by the EU’s General Court. The EU's lower court confirmed that the symbol lacks distinctive character and is easily interpreted as “I love.” Sprd.net can challenge this decision at the EU’s top court within the next two months and 10 days.The press release is attached.
