Australia's revamped AML law to take effect from July 2026 for newly regulated sectors

( July 3, 2025, 04:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia’s updated anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regime will take effect for “tranche two” businesses from July 1, 2026, the financial-crime watchdog said. In a statement, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre said that businesses in the newly regulated sectors, including the legal and accounting professions, real-estate and jeweler industries, should prepare for compliance and have an anti-money laundering program in place. These businesses should also be enrolled as a “reporting entity,” the statement added. The new law will close what has been seen as a significant regulatory gap in Australia, with the financial watchdog Austrac warning that criminals are increasingly exploiting these sectors to conceal illicit wealth and to launder money. The full statement by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre follows:...
