South Korea holds SK Telecom liable for massive USIM data leak

( July 4, 2025, 05:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: SK Telecom has been found at fault for a major data breach that exposed 25 types of SIM-related information, totaling 9.82GB and affecting nearly 27 million records containing unique user identifiers, according to final findings released by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT. Investigators cited poor password management, lack of encryption and failure to address earlier incidents as key causes. The company also violated a government order to preserve forensic data, and the ministry plans to refer the case for criminal investigation. Affected users are eligible to cancel their contracts without penalty because SK Telecom was found to have breached its core obligation to provide secure service.
