EU proposes 90 percent emission reduction target by 2040

( July 2, 2025, 09:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU countries should cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, compared to 1990 levels, under a proposal from the European Commission today. To help achieve the target, high-quality international credits can be used starting from 2036 to account for up to 3 percent of emissions cuts. For residual emissions from hard-to-abate sectors, permanent carbon removals will also be included in the EU emission trading system, the commission said. The proposed target will help the EU agree to an emissions reduction plan to be presented in November in Brazil, at the COP30 conference. The proposal will now be negotiated by member states and lawmakers. Press release follows. A Q&A is attached. ...
