Platforms to face tougher online safety duties in UK under Ofcom’s proposals

By Patricia Figueiredo ( June 30, 2025, 13:58 GMT | Insight) -- Online platforms active in the UK could be required to redesign livestreaming features for underage users, deploy proactive technologies to detect intimate image abuse and adjust algorithms to reduce the risk of illegal content going viral, under new safety measures proposed by Ofcom today. The regulator is consulting on new rules that would expand platforms’ obligations, although a final decision is not expected until mid-2026. If adopted, the additional measures could reshape how services operate in areas ranging from child interaction to crisis response and content moderation.Online platforms in the UK can expect extra regulatory duties to kick in a year from now, as the media watchdog today announced a new consultation on additional online safety measures. The proposals build on previously published codes and seek to strengthen protections established by the Online Safety Act....
