Japan's industry minister to issue assessments on digital platforms by October

( June 30, 2025, 07:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: As Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry began discussions today on the fairness and transparency of major digital platforms in their dealings with Japanese businesses, the ministry said that its discussions will be accelerated this year. METI plans to publish the minister’s draft assessment report for public comment in October and finalize the report by Dec. 18, when the new law promoting competition in smartphone software — to be enforced by the competition agency — takes effect. This year, the ministry's monitoring panel will focus on specific topics and communicate with regulated parties primarily through documentation rather than conducting hearings. The law currently targets Amazon Japan, Rakuten, LY Corp., Apple, Google and Meta Platforms, with TikTok added as a new platform for examination starting next year.
