South Korea's AI policy needs more balance, civil society groups say

( June 27, 2025, 03:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Five South Korean civil society organizations have issued a joint statement expressing concerns about the new government’s policy of prioritizing the promotion of artificial intelligence and proposing measures to better protect democracy and human rights. The Korean Progressive Network, the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, the Lawyers for a Democratic Society and two other organizations proposed measures to address AI safety and unemployment issues, regulate the use of AI in the enforcement of public authority, protect personal information during AI development and use, ensure compensation procedures for AI-related harm and control the use of military AI. They issued the statement as recently inaugurated President Lee Jae Myung has yet to announce detailed policies to implement his election pledges to fully support AI development.
