Japan’s Shimamura Music violated freelance worker protection law, JFTC says

( June 25, 2025, 07:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's competition regulator announced today that Shimamura Music violated the country's freelance worker protection law, which took effect last November. According to the Japan Fair Trade Commission, or JFTC, the Tokyo-based operator of music schools failed to disclose contract terms and conditions to 97 independent music instructors and other contractors between November and February 6. The company also required 11 freelance workers to provide 19 unpaid trial lessons during the same period. In addition, it failed to disclose payment dates when issuing orders to 85 freelancers and did not pay by the service receipt date, as required by the new law. In its corrective recommendation, the JFTC instructed Shimamura Music to compensate the affected workers for the unpaid lessons and to implement measures to prevent similar violations in the future.
