EU should strengthen global aviation emissions rules despite US pressures, NGO urges

( June 24, 2025, 20:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: International aviation should be covered by the EU emission trading system to ensure emission reduction, NGO Opportunity Green said in a letter to European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen. Pressures from the US shouldn't discourage the EU from standing up for climate action, adds the NGO. Emissions from the sector are currently covered by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, which only requires emissions over a certain threshold to be offset from 2027, unlike a cap-and-trade system like the EU ETS. Opportunity Green called on the EU to include such emissions in the revision of the EU ETS for aviation expected for 2026. Full letter attached:...
