Anthropic use of copyrighted books fair use, US judge rules; trial looms over pirated books

( June 24, 2025, 12:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A federal judge in California has ruled that Anthropic's use of copyrighted books to train its large language model Claude was "exceedingly transformative" and was therefore a legal use under the Copyright Act, although it must face a trial on allegations it acted illegally over its use of pirated library books for AI training. "This order grants summary judgment for Anthropic that the training use was a fair use," US District Judge William Alsup wrote. "And, it grants that the print-to-digital format change was a fair use for a different reason. But it denies summary judgment for Anthropic that the pirated library copies must be treated as training copies." Alsup said Anthropic must face a trial over its use of those library copies.See attached document....
