Indonesian court rejects Google's appeal of monopoly case

The commercial court “rejects the appeal requested by the Plaintiff in its entirety,” the court said in a document obtained by MLex. The document, however, did not provide further details of the decision. The final hearing was held behind closed doors this week and included only the two parties and judges.
Google's appeal to overturn a verdict by the Indonesian Competition Commission, or KPPU, in a monopoly case against the tech company was rejected by the Central Jakarta Commercial Court. The commercial court “rejects the appeal requested by the Plaintiff in its entirety,” the court said in a document obtained by MLex. The document, however, did not provide further details of the decision. The final hearing was held behind closed doors this week and included only the two parties and judges. “The Commercial Court has rejected the entire objection demanded by Google LLC, regarding the verdict (of the KPPU), stating that the company had practiced monopoly (behavior) and abused its dominant position,” the antitrust regulator said in a statement issued this morning. The KPPU imposed a record fine of 202.5 billion rupiah (approximately $12.4 million) on Jan. 7 — the largest antitrust penalty ever handed down by the Indonesian regulator. The decision was made after the antitrust regulator conducted an investigation of the case from June 28, 2024 until Dec. 3, 2024....
