The angry backlash against Australia's proposed merger filing fees

It’s all part of a commitment by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission to ensure that the cost of reviewing transactions is covered by the filing fees. Yet the size of the proposed fees, and the fact that they make no allowance for smaller transactions, has sparked anger among businesses and the competition lawyers that represent them.That the relationship between regulator and regulated could be strained should come as no surprise in Australia, A new merger regime, which comes into effect at the beginning of July, is adversarial by design and dealmakers will be required to jump through hoops to get a transaction approved....
