EU electricity price surges associated with employment decline, Eurochambres says

( June 17, 2025, 15:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: There is a clear negative relationship between electricity prices and employment levels, according to a report from Eurochambres. A study from 2008-2021 shows that a 10 percent increase in electricity costs is associated with a 1-1.5 percent decrease in employment. The European business group emphasized the importance of reducing energy costs and implementing policies that enhance labor market flexibility and support worker retraining for the future. The report highlights a significant surge in electricity prices across Europe from 2021 onwards, with average wholesale prices reaching 85 euros per megawatt hour in 2024.Report attached....
