EU lawmakers back tougher child sexual abuse law, targeting AI and livestreaming

( June 17, 2025, 11:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Parliament today adopted its position on draft legislation to update the EU’s 2011 directive on child sexual abuse and exploitation. Backed by 599 votes, the proposal expands criminal offenses to cover deepfakes and livestreamed abuse, introduces tougher penalties, removes statutes of limitations, and criminalizes AI systems used for abuse. Talks with the Council of the EU and European Commission on a consensus version of the update are set to begin on June 23.Statement follows....
