US Federal Circuit decision threatens to upend USAA patent portfolio

By Nick Robertson ( June 16, 2025, 21:13 GMT | Insight) -- A decision by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit last week finding four patents for mobile check depositing held by USAA invalid as abstract could unfurl the banking and insurance giant’s patent strategy. The company has relied on similar patents in litigation against multiple major banks and has licensed related technologies to others for hundreds of millions of dollars.The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit threw a wrench in USAA’s patent plans last week with two decisions finding four of its patents invalid. On top of wiping out a pair of verdicts totaling $222 million in its favor to be paid by PNC Bank, the decisions call into question other USAA suits against banking chains and its licensing future....
