Wikipedia, other nonprofits say Utah social media law burdens mission-based online services

( June 3, 2025, 16:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Wikimedia and other nonprofits told a US appeals court that the language of the Utah Social Media Regulation Act goes much further than simply protecting youth from the risks posed by for-profit social media sites and improperly includes mission-driven services. They said that compliance with the law’s age-assurance requirements would prove costly for such platforms, and age-assurance checks will create a barrier for both minors and adults who attempt to access their services. They also argued that the act encroaches upon platforms’ First Amendment rights by requiring a hands-on editorial model to ensure compliance with stringent content restrictions for minors.See attached file....
