Vietnam police crack down on first-ever money laundering case involving AI

In what is thought to be a first for Vietnam, AI-generated videos of the account holders' faces were used to bypass bank biometric authentication security, completing transactions without the physical presence of the account holders.Police in Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Binh have started legal proceedings into a criminal case that allegedly involves the use of artificial intelligence to launder money, in what is thought to be a first for the country. Twenty-one individuals have been charged with gambling and money laundering offences following police raids in accordance with Article 321 and 324 of the Criminal Code. The total betting amount exceeded 1 trillion Vietnamese dong ($39.2 million). Thai Binh police said in a statement that this was a "large-scale, transnational organized crime ring with sophisticated methods, especially the method that appeared for the first time in Vietnam  — using artificial intelligence technology to commit crimes." Their investigations identified a website named 'Kubet,' which hosted several gambling games, with servers located outside of Vietnam. Players used mobile phones to access the website and create gambling accounts, which were linked to their bank accounts, allowing them to deposit and withdraw funds, and place bets on games. At the time of the raids, more than one million gambling accounts had been created....
