Singapore launches enhanced multimodal LLM designed for Southeast Asia

( May 28, 2025, 03:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Singapore has launched the second version of a national large language model designed to be empathetic and culturally attuned to Southeast Asia. The MERaLiON, which stands for Multimodal Empathetic Reasoning and Learning in One Network, was developed by A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research under a S$70 million government program. The second version covers more Southeast Asian languages, detects emotional tone and interprets different styles of spoken language, and understands language mixing or code-switching, which is common in the region. A*STAR signed an MoU with Microsoft last March to work on integrating MERaLiON into the Microsoft 365 productivity suite and Co-pilot. Companies such as Grab and DBS Bank are also part of a consortium of industry partners working to accelerate MERaLiON’s use and adoption. The statement is attached. ...
