HMD entitled to Qualcomm, Huawei license details, US magistrate judge finds

By Melissa Ritti ( May 22, 2025, 17:53 GMT | Insight) -- A California federal magistrate judge yesterday said a request under Section 1782 by Finland’s HMD Global Oy for discovery on rival Huawei Technologies’ settlement agreement with Qualcomm should be granted. Efforts by HMD to secure an order from the Munich District Court, compelling Huawei to hand over the information, were denied in Germany without explanation. At issue abroad are allegations that chipsets implemented in 4G and 5G mobile devices distributed by HMD infringe various Huawei standard essential patents. A similar request from HMD — seeking details on Huawei’s 2019 settlement with Samsung, lodged in a different California court — was voluntarily dismissed with prejudice last month.HMD Global Oy may be on track to receiving details on two key settlement agreements which, it believes, will show Huawei is demanding artificially high royalties on various 4G and 5G-related standard essential patents, or SEPs....
