Meta could be asked by Hamburg DPA to pause AI training in Germany (update*)

By Sara Brandstätter ( May 22, 2025, 13:42 GMT | Insight) -- The Hamburg Data Protection Authority sent a "hearing letter" to Meta Platforms Ireland, which could start an urgent procedure that ultimately could force Meta to suspend AI training in Germany, the authority confirmed to MLex. An urgency procedure under the GDPR's Article 66 could force the social media giant to cease its AI training with historical users' data in Germany for up to three months. The ultimate decision to potentially stop Meta's AI training is up to the Irish DPC, Meta's lead authority. Meta has until Monday morning to respond to the Hamburg DPA, MLex has learned. The Irish DPC told MLex that for now they don't see the need for an urgency measure. The Hamburg Data Protection Authority sent a "hearing letter" to Meta Platforms Ireland, that could lead to an urgency procedure to stop Meta's AI training with historical data in Germany for three months, the authority confirmed to MLex today....
